German Teacher Visit

Sunday 1st Jan 2012

For nearly five months (September 2011 to January 2012), I had been working at Timothy Hackworth Primary School in Shildon.
As I start working as a teacher in Germany after my stay in England, I’m lucky to have learnt a lot about another school system and different methods of teaching. These experiences will definitely influence my future work and thinking.

But as important as my professional experiences are the social and cultural experiences I have made: When I came in late August 2011 to get to know the people I was going to live and work with as well as the area of County Durham, I felt very welcome. Everybody is very friendly and helpful. I am sure that this kindness made it possible for me to meet the Mayor of Darlington on the 9th of January 2012, which makes me feel very honoured.

As I was shown around Darlington’s Town Hall, I didn’t only learn about ceremonies and customs but also about Darlington’s good connections to Mülheim in Germany. I had tea in the parlour with Mayor Lee Vasey, David Allaway, Support Officer, my friend Hilary Tillotson and Tom Nutt, from the Town Twinning Association, which was a very nice experience.

To me, Darlington has become an important town and I know the town centre really well. As I have been living in Shildon, Darlington station was the point where to start all my trips from: Scotland, the coast of Northumbria, Durham, Saltburn, Oxford and a lot more. In my leisure time, I often came to Darlington to go shopping, swimming at the Dolphin Centre or visiting the Folk Club in the Art Centre.

I’m sure that I will come back to County Durham to see all the people and places I go to know.

Thank you very much!
