May 2019 - DTTIA visit to Budapest

Friday 10th May 2019

We left Darlington at noon on 10th May and travelled with Hodgsons Coaches to Leeds Bradford Airport, and then by air with Jet 2 to Budapest, arriving at the Ibis Centrum Hotel at 2030. The hotel was centrally placed and only a 10 minute walk to the River Danube. The hotel was clean, nice rooms, ample breakfast and bar facilities, and the staff were helpful and friendly. I would certainly recommend it and would stay there if I returned.  Budapest is a fabulous City with so much to do - many restaurants and bars, museums, castles, churches, Parliament building, Margaret Island, Heroe's Square and baths/spars of varying sizes. Relitavely cheap, however it took a while to work out the currency which was roughly 350 Forints to the £, and Euros were accepted almost everywhere although the conversion rate was not so good. River and on and off bus services enabled visitors to enjoy both sides of the river, Buda and Pest, at a reasonable cost, however public transport and museums were free to EU citizens over 70 if evidence of age was produced.

Places to see/visit.  Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church - Magnificent views from Buda across to Pest. Vajdahungyad Castle and Lake. Heroe's Square. Parliament Building. Chain Bridge. Liberty Bridge .Elizabeth Bridge. Budapest Castle (Royal Palace). National Museum and Gallery. Citadel (female figure holding palm branch). Gellert Bath (many different hot and cold pools). Many other Baths/Spas. St. Stephen Basilica. Liberty Square. The Great Synagogue. State Opera House. New York Palace. Great Market Hall. Margaret Island (Largest park in Europe with many attractions- a must visit). Fine Arts and many other museums.
